It’s like setting a jar of moonshine on the floor of a boxcar full of 10 hobos and saying, “Now fight for it!” Sure, in the bloody aftermath you can say to each of the losers, “Hey, you could have had it if you’d fought harder!” and that’s true on an individual level. But not collectively — you knew goddamned well that nine hobos weren’t getting any hooch that night. So why are you acting like it’s their fault that only one of them is drunk?
You’re intentionally conflating “anyone can have the moonshine” with “everyone can have it.” And you are doing it because you’re hoping that we will all be too busy fighting each other to ask why there was only one jar.
In the midst of all this, The New York Times reports financial firms are creeping back to lending practices that prey on the vulnerable. Banks are offering loans and credit cards to consumers with damaged credit — and reaping the benefits in the form of high interest rates and late fees from missed payments.
A bankruptcy lawyer quoted in the Times piece referred to such consumers being addicted to credit. But is addicted the right term?
Real wages have plunged over the past 40 years. In real dollars, adjusted consistently for inflation, a two-income family today makes (on average) 15 percent less than the average single-income family did 40 years ago.
The cost of living hasn’t dropped with wages — it’s gone up. Education costs have skyrocketed, housing prices have soared and prices have climbed upward on essentials like food. Combine a climbing cost of living with falling wages and high unemployment and is it any surprise that Americans are turning to credit?
So important - and unbelievably disheartening - to remember this. Things are looking great for Americans, if by “Americans” you mean “ones who were already wealthy and run giant companies.”
And this is why I’m voting OBAMA 2012
Because Obama isn’t influenced by corporate interests at all. But, well, it’s still the best option in a country that insists on calling its outmoded two party system a democracy.
If the system only allows for two choices, one of them just has to be slightly less shit than the other to stay in power. This does not progress make. The world has changed a lot in the last 225 years, America. Has your precious constitution kept up?
An atheist liberal pacifist democrat evolutionist muslim feminist socialist gay jew communist catholic unionist abortionist professor (and a member of the ACLU and NAACP) was bitching at a college class and she told the class that she was a strong independent menstruating womyn and she was going to prove that there is no GOD (peace be upon him). She screamed, “GAWD, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I’ll give you 15 human minutes, and I’m glad all those people died on 9/11! Also all men are rapists and I have abortions for fun.”
Ten earthling minutes went by. She kept taunting God (peace be upon him), saying, “Here I am, GAWD, if that is your real name. I’m still waiting. Is my strong, powerful, and financially independent vagina too much for your patriarchy? You stupid man!”
She got down to the last couple of minutes and a brave, patriotic, pro-life marine just returned from the War of Independence and honorably discharged and newly registered in every class backflipped up to the professor, hit her full force in the face with a spinning flying drop kick (with metal as fuck jet-boots on), and sent her flying from her platform through two panes of glass, two twin towers, a pile of cans, a young mother pushing a baby carriage, a nun and a pile of boxes. The professor struggled up, obviously shaken, with three broken legs, two broken arms, a broken jaw, a broken skull, 12 broken ribs, internal bleeding and a missing spine. She bitched, “What’s the matter with you? Why did you do that? Are you afraid of a strong beautiful negro womyn? You stupid Christian, I only worship my vagina!”
That marine replied, “GOD (peace be upon him) was busy watching over MY buddies engaged in combat in the coke wars (Never forget). So… he… sent… ME!”
The professor cried a single tear and said “I was wrong to want equal rights for homosexuals, women and minorities. Barry Hussain Osama is a Muslim socialist atheist and he hates America. I am now pro-life, pro-guns, and pro-capital punishment”. The professor then burnt her copy of Origin of the Species, shaved her legs, put her bra back on, and started to make the marine a sandwich. “If Trayvon Martin didn’t want to die he should not have been wearing a hoodie!”
“Welcome to the Republican Party” Said the Marine.
The students applauded and all registered with the Republican party that day and accepted Jesus as their lord and savior. An eagle named “Small Government” flew into the room and perched atop the American Flag (where it shed a single tear).
That professor was Richard Elizabeth Dawkins. That college class was The Beatles. That young mother was Sarah Palin. That nun was Michele Bachmann. That eagle was Ron Paul. That marine’s name? Albert Einstein.
An open letter from screenwriter Joe Eszterhas to Mel Gibson.
- You said the Holocaust was “mostly a lot of horseshit.” You said the Torah made reference to the sacrifice of Christian babies and infants. When I told you that you were confusing the Torah with The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, … you insisted “it’s in the Torah — it’s in there!” (It isn’t).
There are a few things you should know about me before I start ranting. I am a white heterosexual Christian cis male middle-class American. I am a member of the majority in pretty much every area of life. I am privileged in ways that it took me a long time to fully understand.
And racism still pisses me off so much I can’t even see straight.
I admit to being fairly ignorant of the concept of privilege for most of my life. And I know that what I’m about to say won’t mean as much as if it had come from the fingertips of somebody who truly understands oppression. But I still have opinions on this, and if you don’t want to read them, get out now. This is mostly related to drama on Katrina’s blog, but a lot of this has been stewing for a while so I’m letting it all out.
Also, if my white privilege causes me to say anything ignorant, feel free to correct me (politely, if you can).
